IoT Network Updates

We are working on a multi-year program to lay the groundwork for the next generation of network technology, such as LTE-M, NB-IoT, and 5G, which will power the future of the Internet of Things. As part of this program, we are also making changes to our 2G and 3G networks, eventually phasing out support for IoT devices on 2G.

We’re phasing out legacy technologies to evolve our wireless network and bring Canadians next generation technology.

We have extended the 1900MHz network sunset date to June 7th (earlier March 31st) to give more time to support our customer transitions. After June 7th, 2021 we will no longer offer 1900 MHz on our 2G and 3G networks. This means 2G and 3G IoT devices using 1900 MHz will not work after this date.

After December 31, 2021 IoT devices will no longer be supported on the 2G network across the remaining 850 MHz frequency band. This means 2G IoT devices will no longer be supported across any frequency bands on the 2G network.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your Rogers Account Representative or visit https://www.rogers.com/enterprise/contact-us

All 2G and 3G IoT devices that operate only on 1900 MHz frequency band should be migrated to an LTE or LTE-M device prior to June 7th, 2021, to avoid service disruptions.

All customers with 2G- only IoT devices are requested to migrate their devices prior to December 31, 2021, to avoid service disruptions*. After that date 2G IoT devices will no longer be supported.

No action is necessary. Your device will continue to operate on the 3G 850MHz network. Only the 3G 1900 MHz network will no longer be supported after June 7th, 2021.

4G LTE wireless IoT devices that fallback to 2G/3G 1900MHz for data or voice support will no longer be able to use 2G/3G 1900MHz after June 7th, 2021.

4G LTE IoT devices that are dual-band and support 3G 850MHz will continue to operate on the 3G 850MHz network. Those devices operating only on the 3G 1900 MHz network will no longer be supported.

If fallback for data or voice support to 3G 1900MHz is important for your solution, these Wireless IoT devices should be migrated prior to June 7th, 2021 to avoid service disruptions.

Rogers is pleased to offer your organization the latest in network technologies that provide several benefits over older technologies:

  • LTE – available for your high-bandwidth applications
  • LTE-M (Category M1) – available for your low-bandwidth applications, offering the benefits of extended battery life, improved coverage, and low-cost devices.
  • For voice requirements, please connect with your Account Representative to determine best options

Please contact your Rogers Account Representative if you have any issues activating your new device with the SIM.
