How to Spot a Telemarketing Scam

How do you know if a telemarketing call is legitimate or a criminal posing as a business?

While telemarketing is a sales tool for many businesses, including Rogers, telemarketing scams are where third parties fraudulently claim to represent legitimate businesses to attempt to defraud consumers.

Like many large companies, Rogers is, from time to time, targeted by third parties claiming to represent us to sell our products and services to consumers.

We will never do business with organizations that do not respect the wishes of our customers or follow the Telemarketing Rules, including respecting the National Do Not Call list. If you receive a suspicious call, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501 or through its website.

Tips and reminders for identifying that a telemarketing call is NOT from a Rogers representative:

  • We will never call you to sell you a service you already have with us.
  • We won’t offer to sell you services from a competitor.
  • If you did not initiate the contact with the caller, avoid providing personal or financial information over the phone.
  • Ask for the callers’ name or employee number. Our representatives will never refuse to give you their name or an interaction number.
  • If it sounds illegitimate or too good to be true, it probably is. Hang up if something doesn’t seem right.
  • We will never use abusive, unprofessional, or derogatory language.
  • We will never hang up on you.

What to do if you receive fraudulent telemarketing call from someone who claims to be with Rogers?

  • Report it to us immediately
  • Never give out personal details such as your credit card or banking information.
  • If you verbally provided any PIN or password associated with your account, change it immediately.
  • Try to capture as many details as you can about the call – date, time, calling party telephone number, name of caller, and specific of the offer made.
