Spotlight: Ricky Forbes of Blue Moose Media
This entrepreneur stresses the importance of building an engaged audience with social media
Tell us about yourself and your passion for the small business community.
I am a professional storm chaser, adventurer and digital marketing consultant. My love of entrepreneurship started with my own silk screening company when I was 15 years old. From there, I have had multiple ventures, but as time went on I found my passion really lay in marketing. As a hobby, I joined a storm-chasing team, and over 6 years learning about social media marketing to promote that passion, we created a TV show called “Tornado Hunters”. Today I continue to hone my skills in social media marketing and help other businesses grow using these tools.
Those past experiences led me to become an owner with Blue Moose Media, Saskatchewan’s leading social media management and training agency. I wake up every day excited to go to work, as our team teaches other small businesses skills that make a difference. We work with entrepreneurs and their teams, teaching theory, strategy and — the best part — implementation. Often before we even leave, clients are already seeing results.
I love working with businesses from all walks of life. The challenge of how to tell their story and build their brand is my favorite part — and when they start to see a difference from something we have shown them, it makes it all worthwhile.
What is the most rewarding part about being an entrepreneur? What keeps you passionate and driven to succeed?
The most rewarding part of being an entrepreneur is walking the path less travelled and forging your own future. It’s often difficult, but that’s the best part - it wouldn’t be fun without the challenge. Goal setting, team work and a passion for doing great work is what keeps me driven.
We know digital marketing can be a true key to success to developing and continuing to grow a business. For you, what are some key social media platforms or tools you suggest for small business owners?
There are many platforms out there, and they all have their pros and cons. But to answer this quickly, Facebook is by far the largest platform covering the biggest audience. Facebook currently has nearly 80% of internet users on their platform; the next runner up is Instagram at around 30%, and the rest of the platforms go down from there. We also recommend that clients stick to one or two platforms, do really well at those first, then move on to additional areas if needed.
"That said, LinkedIn is a great business-to-business platform and one of my favourites for interacting with clients."
What advice do you have for aspiring and prospering business owners when it comes to taking their business to the next level?
Ask for help. You will have a lot strengths, but you can’t do it all, and you probably don’t have enough time anyway. Whatever it is — numbers, marketing, business strategy, etc. — identify where you need help and source an expert in that field.
Another big lesson has been work/life balance. This is something I struggle with. Business is fun, the challenge is consuming, but you can’t forget about everything else. The best advice I ever got is “Schedule everything. I don’t care what you do, but schedule it.” Schedule time for friends, family, fitness, free time to yourself, time for continuing education, etc. Keeping yourself balanced will give you the best shot at success.
