Tell us about yourself and your role within your company.
I’m the owner and director of both H2H Media Group, a Toronto-based media company, and nicholaskusmich.com, a digital advertising agency and consultancy, which I established in 2005.
When Facebook launched their advertising platform, I was in just the right place at just the right time; I realized it was going to be a game-changer for small businesses and entrepreneurs who needed to be able to extend their reach without breaking their advertising budget.
What is the most rewarding part about being an entrepreneur? What keeps you passionate and driven to succeed?
"The ability to build a business around my life and family, rather than a maintaining a life and family around my business."
We know how important productivity is for developing and continuing to grow a business. For you, what are some key concepts or tools you suggest for small business owners?
I live by Parkinson’s law, which acknowledges that for most people, “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”
With this in mind, you can increase productivity by
· Setting firm deadlines for yourself. You’ll find that you find both the focus and the time needed to get that work done. And the sooner the deadline is, the easier it’ll be to find the necessary concentration and bandwidth needed to complete it.
· Making your deadlines public. Nothing will spur you to action like being accountable to others, whether that’s to your business partners, clients or employees.
· Repeating this process over and over, which will make it easier in the future.
Using these principles, I’m able to get massive amounts of work done in very short periods of time. For more on how I use these principles in my business, check out my Medium article on the topic here.
What advice do you have for aspiring and prospering business owners when it comes to taking their business to the next level?
Stay focused. It’s easy to chase shiny objects and get distracted. Keep business objectives always in sight, both to yourself and to all your stakeholders. Sharing your accountabilities with employees, business partners and even family will improve productivity and help you make work-life balance possible.
