Check for existing deadbolt latches

If the edge of the door has 2 individual latches, a Yale Real Living deadbolt can be installed.  The plates will be much longer if you have a mortise lock or a 3-point locking system, which can prevent installation.

Number of Holes on Door The door has 2 holes – one for a deadbolt and one for a passage knob or lever. Ensure that there are 2 individual latches. There is only 1 hole on the door (additional hole required for a deadbolt on top, or for a knob/lever below). There is a mortise lock installed on the door.

Check to see what may be installed above the existing deadbolt

If no additional locks or hardware interfere with the space required for installation, a Yale Real Living deadbolt should install properly.

Additional Hardware Above Existing Deadbolt. There is no additional hardware above the existing deadbolt. There is hardware above the existing deadbolt but it can be removed or modified. There is hardware above the existing deadbolt. It cannot be modified or removed and will interfere with installation.

Measure for available space needed

Check to ensure that hardware below the deadbolt allows enough room for the Yale Real Living deadbolt to install properly.

Additional Hardware Below Existing Deadbolt There is at least 2” of space below the deadbolt. There is other hardware in very close proximity to where the deadbolt will be installed. The hardware below the deadbolt will interfere with installation and it cannot be removed.

Check door thickness before ordering a lock

If thickness is between 1 3/4 to 2 1/4”, the lock will work without additional parts. If it is to be installed on 1 3/8” to 1 3/4” door, a thin door gasket kit will be required to complete the installation.

Door Thickness 1 3/4 to 2-1/4” thickness means additional parts are required. 1 3/8 to 1 3/4” thickness means athin gasket kit is required. Less than 1 3/8” or greater than 2-1/4” will prevent a Yale Real Living deadbolt from installing properly.

Check for proper alignment of latches

If the door has to be pushed or pulled with excessive force to lock the existing deadbolt hardware, some adjustments may be required. An enlarged strike (seen below, on the right) is slightly larger than the existing standard strike on the door. Only use the enlarged strike to correct situations where excessive force is required to lock the existing deadbolt hardware. Yale locks also feature a tapered deadbolt, which help correct most misalignment conditions.

Ease of Locking The door closes and locks easily with existing hardware, without excess force. The door requires some excess force to close and lock with existing hardware (install enlarged strike if necessary). The door is extremely difficult to close and lock with existing hardware.
