WiFi Motion in the Rogers Xfinity app

Learn how WiFi Motion works, who can use it and how to set it up in the Rogers Xfinity app, including motion sensitivity and pet-related settings.

WiFi Motion isn't a home security service and isn't professionally monitored.

Availability and limitations

WiFi Motion is available if you have:

  • Rogers Xfinity Internet
  • A Rogers Xfinity Gateway Gen 3 (XB8), or
  • A Rogers Xfinity Gateway Gen 4 (XB10).

WiFi Motion isn't compatible if you:

  • Use Storm-Ready WiFi
  • Have a Rogers Xfinity Gateway Gen 1 (XB6) or Gen 2 (XB7)
  • Use Rogers Xfinity WiFi Boost Pod Gen 1 (XE1) extenders. Only Gen 2 (XE2) pods are compatible.

What's WiFi Motion?

WiFi Motion detects movement in your home by sensing changes in the WiFi signals between your gateway and WiFi-connected devices.

The feature is turned off by default. You can turn it on through the Rogers Xfinity app. When WiFi Motion is on, you can choose when to get motion notifications. Motion activity can also be reviewed for the past 7 days.

Understanding motion detection

Motion is detected in the areas between your selected devices and the gateway. Devices directly above or below the gateway, on another floor, may be less effective.

WiFi Motion works best when certain device conditions are met. For clearer motion detection, choose devices that:

  • Stay in one place
  • Stay powered on, as some devices may not work well in sleep mode
  • Have a strong WiFi connection

During WiFi Motion setup, the Rogers Xfinity app will show you devices on your WiFi network that are available for selection.

Turning on WiFi Motion

Follow these steps to turn on WiFi Motion or follow the step-by-step interactive guide Activating WiFi Motion.

  1. From the Rogers Xfinity app main screen, select the Home tab icon.
  2. Select Check out WiFi Motion, then Get Started. This option will only appear if you have compatible equipment for this feature.
  3. Select the WiFi motion sensing check box, then Continue.
  4. Select Use recommended devices.
  5. Select Done.

Motion sensitivity options

You can choose a motion sensitivity level based on your home, especially if you share walls with neighbours, as higher sensitivity may cause more alerts.

  • High sensitivity detects smaller movements, like the wave of a hand.
  • Medium sensitivity detects larger movements, like a person walking around.
  • Low sensitivity may be a good option if higher sensitivities cause unwanted notifications.

To change your motion sensitivity:

  1. On the Home tab, select the WiFi Motion status.
  2. Select Settings (gear icon).
  3. Select Motion sensitivity and choose HighMedium or Low.

When High motion sensitivity is turned on, motion from pets under 40 lbs can be excluded from notifications and activity history. Larger pets may still be detected.

Placing motion-sensing devices at least 4 feet off the floor may also help reduce pet-related motion detection.

To adjust pet sensitivity:

  1. On the Home tab, select the WiFi Motion status.
  2. Select the Settings (gear icon).
  3. Select Pet sensitivity and toggle on Exclude small pets.
