Force reload the BlackBerry Operating System on Windows

The following steps explain how to force reload the BlackBerry OS using a Windows computer.

This process is required when attempting to reload the operating system on BlackBerry’s that are not being detected by the BlackBerry Desktop Software.

Note: Completing the reload process will delete all content from the device. If you haven’t backed up your BlackBerry previously with BlackBerry Desktop Software, the content will not be recoverable. 

Step 1: Installing the BlackBerry Device Software

  1. Click here to locate the handheld software for your BlackBerry device.
  2. Select the BlackBerry model from the dropdown and click Next.
  3. Locate the device software and click Download.
    • It is recommended to always download the latest version.
  4. Fill in the required fields and click Next.
  5. Read and select Agree to the Terms and Conditions. Click Next.
  6. Click Download.
  7. Once the download is complete launch the installation file.
  8. Follow the prompts to install BlackBerry device software.

Step 2: Reload the operating system on your BlackBerry

  1. Connect your BlackBerry to the computer.
  2. On the computer navigate to the following path.
    • Windows 32 Bit:
      • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\Loader.exe
    • Windows 64 Bit:
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\Loader.exe
  3. Launch the Loader application.
  4. Click Next on the Welcome screen.
  5. In the Communication Port Selection window, your device PIN number should be displayed. Proceed to Step 6 if it does.
  6. If the device PIN is not displaying, try the following in order:
    • Remove and reinsert the battery while the device is connected to the computer.
    • Close the Loader application, remove the battery and launch the Loader application.
    • Disconnect and reconnect the device to the computer.
    • Note: if you device PIN is still not showing after completing the steps above, please contact Rogers Wireless Technical Support at 1-866-931-3282 for repair or replacement options should your BlackBerry Smartphone still be under the warranty coverage.
  7. If the device PIN is displaying. Click Next.
    • The Loader application will begin reading your device software.
  8. Select Leave the system applications on the device unchanged. (Recommended). Click Next.support-screen capture-AppLoader1
  9. Select all applications you wish to install to the device, and click Next.
  10. Click Advanced.
  11. Check off Delete all application data. Click Next.
  12. Select Do not automatically back up and restore the device application data during the loading process. Click Next.support-screen capture-AppLoader2
  13. Click Finish.
    • Note: It is recommended to plug in the power if this process is performed on a laptop.
  14. The device will now begin reloading the operating system on the BlackBerry.
    • Reinsert the battery without disconnecting the device from the computer if necessary.
  15. A window will state the operation was successful. Click Close.
    • If you have a previous backup file proceed to Section 3.

Step 3: Restore information to your BlackBerry

  1. Connect your BlackBerry to the computer.
  2. Launch the BlackBerry Desktop Software.
  3. Click Device, then click Restore.
  4. Select a backup file.
  5. Click one of the following:
    • All device data and settings if the issue is NOT specific to a database, i.e. trackpad malfunctioning, Wi-Fi not turning on, etc...
    • Select device data and settings if the issue is specific to a database, i.e. contacts, calendars, etc...
  6. Click Restore.
