About 5G
What is 5G?
5G stands for fifth generation. 5G is the latest and most transformative network technology offered since wireless services were introduced in 1985 and will change the way we live, work and experience the world around us.
As they evolve, 5G networks will allow us to stream, download and upload massive amounts of data at unprecedented speeds. And with the capacity to link together billions of devices, 5G will connect us not only with our loved ones but to our homes, machines, cars, businesses and communities in ways we can only imagine.
What will 5G mean for businesses?
Not just speed, 5G wireless technology will deliver reliability and real-time connectivity. With ultra-low latency, the delay between sending a request and the network responding will theoretically drop to one millisecond. That’s 400 times faster than the blink of an eye. This allows connected devices to run a range of applications requiring quick responsiveness for innovations such as autonomous vehicles, telesurgery, smart buildings, smart cities and more.
As a Rogers for Business customer, what will I need to access 5G?
To use 5G,you need a 5G-enabled device and a 5G multi-SIM with an eligible Rogers for Business plan in an area where there is 5G coverage.
How will 5G be different than 4G LTE?
5G will, over time, offer us experiences unlike any we've seen so far:
Connections everywhere
5G will support many more connections as the number of connected devices in our homes, businesses and communities grow.
- Think: Smart cities and digitally connected world!
Instant responses
5G will bring us ultra-low latency, meaning near-instantaneous network access and less of a delay in sending and receiving data.
- Think: Instant responses and lag-fee multi-player cloud gaming
Unprecedented speeds
5G will allow you to stream, download and upload massive quantities of data at unprecedented speeds.
- Think: Downloading your 4K movie in the blink of an eye
Is there a charge for 5G access?
5G access is included with Eligible mobile plans, Shared Unlimited Data Plans, and 10GB and above business wireless plans at no extra charge.
Where is Rogers 5G available?
We rolled out Canada’s first 5G network in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal in 2020. Today, we provide 5G service in over 1,600 communities and we’re continuing to expand across Canada. Check out our network coverage map.
Will I need to replace my equipment now that 5G is available?
Devices need to be built with 5G technology to connect to a 5G network, but that doesn’t mean you have to replace what you currently have. 4G networks will co-exist with 5G, which means that all current 4G devices will continue to work. In fact, 4G continues to get better with improvements in technology, which provide significant speed improvements and lower latency. Pre-5G IoT devices will continue to operate on LTE.
Can I bring my own 5G device?
Yes, but we suggest you check with your device manufacturer to make sure your device is certified for use on our network.
Keep in mind, to access our 5G network you’ll need a Rogers for Business Shared Unlimited Data Plan or 10GB and above Business Wireless Plan. You’ll be able to access 5G at no extra charge in areas with 5G coverage.
What happens to 4G/LTE now that 5G is being rolled out?
4G/LTE will co-exist with 5G for the foreseeable future and we continue to make significant investments in 4G/LTE to bring higher speeds and greater reliability to our customers. 4G/LTE networks offer better in-building coverage.
How will 5G support multiple office locations?
5G’s higher bandwidth and lower latency supports greater use of video to connect to both colleagues and customers for a real-time, face-to-face experience using both mobile and room-based systems. Additionally, branch offices will benefit from improved performance of applications stored hundreds or even thousands of miles away.
I’m concerned about network security. Is the Rogers 5G network safe to access?
We take our responsibility for keeping customer data and information private and secure very seriously.
We work with government and industry partners to help ensure our networks are safe and secure, and we ensure that the standards they set are built into our networks, including 5G.
Since 1985, we've partnered with Ericsson and invested billions in our wireless networks to deliver a faster, more reliable experience than ever before. Today we continue to work together to boost and densify our fibre-powered network with 5G-ready technology.
Additionally, the devices we sell meet all Government of Canada standards and are certified for use in Canada.
Are there health concerns associated with the Rogers 5G network?
The health and safety of all Canadians is of utmost importance to us. We work closely with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada to make sure every product and service we offer Canadians meets rigorous safety standards.
All of our products and services meet Safety Code 6: Health Canada's Radiofrequency Exposure Guidelines.
For further information about Safety Code 6, please visit Health Canada’s website.
Will I be able to use my 5G device outside of Canada?
We have started to roll out 5G roaming on select devices in the United States, and more devices will have this feature over time. For devices that do not currently support 5G roaming, you can use Roam Like HomeTM with your 5G phone in over 185 international destinations when travelling, all for a low daily rate. Learn more about Roam Like Home.
I have a 5G phone, an eligible plan, and I’m in an area with 5G coverage—but I can’t connect to the 5G network. Why?
You might not be able to connect to a 5G network because:
- Your device is connecting to an HSPA+ or 4G LTE network, and that network’s signal is stronger,
- You’re in an Extended Coverage area, or
- You’re roaming in an area outside of Canada that isn’t covered by an existing 5G roaming agreement.
I upgraded my phone and received a 5G SIM, what should I do?
If you’ve upgraded to a new phone and received a 5G SIM, please update your SIM info in My Business Hub or contact your Telecom Administrator.
What is IoT?
The Internet of Things, or IoT, refers to a system of connected devices and machines that can interact and exchange data over a network, and act on the information they get from each other, without requiring human action. An example would be vehicles equipped with sensors that provide real-time information for collision avoidance, traffic signal timings and safety alerts.
