It’s easy to transfer a number to Rogers from another carrier – also called “porting.” We’ve outlined simple steps to follow, as well as everything you need to know about porting your existing number to us.
How to port your existing number
1. Confirm if your number is eligible.
Active wireless, landline or fax numbers are transferable (pager numbers are not). Don’t cancel your current service or remove your SIM card, your number must remain active to be transferred—It will cancel automatically when the transfer is complete.
2. Start your transfer request with us.
Once you have an active number with us and your Rogers SIM, you’ll need the following information from your previous carrier:
- From a wireless carrier: account number, PIN or password, IMEI or ESN
- From a landline carrier: the billing name and service address
3. Confirm and complete your transfer.
After we initiate your request to your previous carrier, keep an eye on the number you’re transferring. You’ll receive a text message from your carrier, and you must respond YES to the text message within 90 minutes to confirm the transfer.
If there are any issues with transferring your number, we will call you to get the information we need to complete the transfer.
You’ll receive a text message from us when the transfer of your number is complete. Wireless number transfers usually take about 2.5 hours to complete, while landline transfers usually take about 2 business days to complete.
Keep in mind:
- You may need to restart your device to get a good connection.
- Your Rogers temporary number will automatically be replaced by the number you wanted to transfer.
- If you had the T9-1-1 (Text with 911) service with your previous carrier, you’ll need to register for it again on the Rogers website.
My transfer has not completed yet. Was it cancelled?
The transfer will be cancelled if:
- you reject the request by replying NO
- you fail to respond within 90 minutes
- the info you submitted is not valid
You must have your previous carrier's SIM in your phone to get the text message. If you don’t reply in time, contact us and we will send a new transfer request.
Is there a charge to transfer my number?
There is no charge to transfer your number over, but you are responsible for any contractual obligations, including payment of any early cancellation fees or any outstanding balance to your current carrier (if applicable).
Will I be able to keep my phone number if I move to a different city?
It’s possible to transfer your number outside of your original local calling area. In such a case though, all of your outgoing and incoming calls outside of your former local calling area will be considered long-distance; all applicable long-distance charges will apply.
What if I need to do a landline-to-wireless transfer?
- Landline-to-Wireless transfers may take longer depending on the complexity of the number transfer from your current carrier.
- If you have an alarm system connected to your landline, it must be deactivated before the transfer.
- If you are with an internet service provider that connected you to the internet via the telephone line, this service will be deactivated by your previous provider.
Will I be able to keep my phone or should I get a new phone instead?
Both options are available to you!
- If you bring your own phone to Rogers, you’ll need to get a Rogers SIM card.
- You can also get a new phone online or go to a Rogers Store.
What will happen to my voicemail?
Your voicemail may reset during the transfer. It’s best to retrieve all your messages before starting a transfer request.
If you set up your Rogers voicemail (e.g., register a greeting) before the transfer of your number is completed, you’ll need to set it up again after the number is successfully transferred.
