Spotlight: Kari Skelton of Jim Pattison Broadcast Group

Flexibility, freedom and the opportunity for community-building drives this entrepreneur.

Tell us about yourself and your role within your company.

I’m a full-time, work-from-home mom. I’m the founder and creative director at KariSkelton.com, a lifestyle website I launched in 2017. We cover fashion, food and parenting-related topics. I enjoyed a rewarding career in radio and television prior to my move online.

What is the most rewarding part about being an entrepreneur? What keeps you passionate and driven to succeed?

The most rewarding part about being an entrepreneur is the flexibility and freedom it affords. I plan my schedule to jive with our family life, maintaining compatibility between my roles as entrepreneur and stay-at-home mom.

More specifically, the most rewarding thing about being a blogger is fostering a community comprising like-minded people. Pressing “publish” on a blog post is a thrill, knowing it's going to start a conversation, provide guidance or inspire someone in some way. My curiosity, my well-being and my family’s well-being all keep me passionate and driven to succeed.

The digital landscape is changing rapidly, with more and more Canadians using digital marketing tools to drive more leads and increase sales. For you, what are some key concepts or strategies that you suggest for small business owners?

"Engagement is everything."

Find a way to be professionally personal. Reach out to clients, customers and strangers alike. Insert yourself into conversations around your areas of interest and expertise. Be authentic. Don't obsess over how many people are following your social media accounts.

Rather, take a close look at how many people are engaging with your posts. How many of those represent your target demographic? What's working for you and what's not, engagement-wise? Find what works and be consistent.

What advice do you have for aspiring and prospering business owners when it comes to taking their business to the next level?

If you're going to go for it, go for it.
