What is Protected Browsing and how does it work?

Protected Browsing is an opt-in service for some Rogers Internet customers that you can use to help safeguard your Rogers Xfinity WiFi network against malicious content. You can turn it off at any time.

When enabled, Protected Browsing can reduce the risk of accessing known sources of malware, spyware and phishing for all devices connected to your Rogers Xfinity WiFi network.

If a device connected to your network attempts to access a website known to host malicious content, a block page will be displayed. In the case of secure websites (https) or mobile applications, the block page may not be displayed, but access is still prevented.

Note: For most Rogers Internet customers, the Protected Browsing feature has been replaced by Advanced Security on the Rogers Xfinity app.

What’s the difference between Protected Browsing and Advanced Security?

Protected Browsing is an older Rogers Xfinity app feature that prevents you from visiting unsafe websites that are known sources of malware, spyware and phishing. For most Rogers Xfinity Internet customers, Protected Browsing has been replaced by the Advanced Security feature.

Advanced Security is a feature available to all Rogers Xfinity internet customers that monitors your entire home network for suspicious activity. The Advanced Security feature blocks unknown sources from trying to access your connected devices and alerts you of any suspicious activity.

Why can’t I access Protected Browsing?

Protected Browsing is an older Rogers Xfinity app feature. It’s only available to some Rogers Internet customers using select modem models. For all Rogers customers, you can protect your devices with the latest Rogers Xfinity app security features Parental Controls and Advanced Security.

What criteria are used to determine if content is safe to access with the Protected Browsing feature?

Rogers has engaged a third-party vendor to determine which content should be restricted under Protected Browsing.

To do this, the vendor maintains a database that maps online content to a set of over 400 categories. Based on industry standards, best practices and experience, our vendor has recommended that content in categories related to malware, spyware, viruses, phishing, child abuse, software piracy and copyright theft be blocked under Protected Browsing.

Can I add or remove specific websites from Protected Browsing?

Not at this time. To access a blocked website, you will need to disable Protected Browsing.

Does Protected Browsing protect devices when using a public WiFi Hotspot or cellular network?

Protected Browsing only protects devices when connected to your Rogers Xfinity WiFi network.

Does Protected Browsing guarantee that access to all malicious content will be prevented?

While the vendor regularly updates the database for potentially dangerous online content, Protected Browsing doesn't guarantee protection from all malicious content. New malicious content can be introduced at any time, so we recommend that you always follow safe internet practices.
