I’ve turned on data roaming. What’s next?

When you arrive in a Roam Like Home eligible destination, you’ll receive a welcome text message confirming your enrolment and the daily fee for use. Once you get the confirmation message, you’re good to go! You now have full access to all the data, talk and text included in your monthly plan.

Can I use Roam Like Home on extended trips?

Yes. When you use Roam Like Home on extended trips you’ll only pay the daily fee ($12 in the U.S. or $15 in any other eligible destination) for a maximum of 20 calendar days per monthly bill. If you use Roam Like Home in a destination for more than 20 days during the same billing cycle, you will not incur additional daily fees.

Let’s say, for example, that your monthly billing period ends on the fifth of each month. If you travel to a Roam Like Home eligible destination from January 1–30 (based on Eastern Time) and use your phone each day of the trip, you’ll be charged for:

  • 5 days (Jan. 1–5) of use for the billing cycle ending on Jan. 5.
  • 20 days (Jan. 6–25) of use for the billing cycle starting on Jan. 6.

As you’re only charged to use Roam Like Home for a max of 20 days per monthly bill, you’d round out your trip with five calendar days of access to all of the data, voice and text included in your monthly plan — at no extra charge. It’s roaming on us!

Tip: Need a quick refresher on billing dates? See our Online and Paper Billing FAQs.

Keep in mind: The 20-day maximum Roam Like fee applies separately to the U.S. ($12 a day) and all other eligible destinations ($15 a day). For example, if you spend 20 days in the U.S. and then 10 days in Mexico within one monthly bill period, you’ll be charged 20 days for the U.S. ($240 total) and 10 days for Mexico ($150 total).

Can I use Roam Like Home in multiple destinations in one day?

Yes, you can travel between eligible Roam Like Home destinations because the fee covers you for any usage within the same calendar day until 11:59:59 p.m. ET, regardless of which time zone you are travelling in.

Keep in mind: If you travel between the U.S. and another Roam Like Home destination outside the U.S. within the same calendar day (based on ET) and you use your device in both places, you will be charged twice ($12 for roaming in the U.S. and $15 for roaming in another eligible destination). When you are charged the second time, you will be covered until 11:59:59 p.m. ET of that calendar day.

How long does the Roam Like Home daily fee cover me?

From the first moment you use Roam Like Home in an eligible destination, you’ll pay the daily fee to access the data, talk and text included in your plan until 11:59:59 p.m. ET that calendar day.

For example, if you visit New York City and use Roam Like Home to check your email at 11 am ET, you would then have full access to all the data, talk and text included in your monthly plan until 11:59:59 p.m. ET the same day. If you continue using talk, text and data after midnight ET on the following day, you’ll be charged the daily fee for that day.

However, if you travel to a place that’s many time zones away, like Japan, here is how your daily fee would work:

  • You start using Roam Like Home in Japan – Japan Standard Time (JT) at 1:00 a.m. on December 13. This is 11 a.m. ET on December 12.
  • Your usage ends at 9:00 p.m. JT on December 15. This is 1 a.m. ET on December 15.
  • We calculate usage from 11:00 a.m. ET on December 12 until 1:00 a.m. ET on December 15.
  • The bill would show 4 daily charges for Roam Like Home, starting on December 12 until December 15.

Keep in mind: If you travel between the U.S. and another Roam Like Home destination outside the U.S within the same calendar day (based on ET) and you use your device in both places, you’ll be charged twice ($12 for roaming in the U.S. and $15 for roaming in another eligible destination). When you are charged the second time, you’ll be covered until 11:59:59 p.m. ET of that calendar day.

Can I get 5G access while I am roaming?

We have started to roll out 5G roaming within the United States on select devices. Currently, 5G roaming is available on the Google Pixel 4a 5G and Google Pixel 5, and more devices will have this feature over time.

What happens when family/friends call me when I’m using Roam Like Home?

When family and friends call you when you’re using Roam Like Home (i.e. call you from Canada, your Roam Like Home destination, or any other country), the call will be treated as if they’re calling you in Canada. Whether or not the person reaching you incurs long distance or airtime charges for the call will depend on their specific phone plan.

Keep in mind that you will not be charged the Roam Like Home daily fee for incoming texts from family and friends — no matter where they are in the world.

How does the Roam Like Home fee work if I use multiple devices?

If you have more than one device under your wireless plan, be aware that the daily fee applies to each device used in a Roam Like Home destination.

For example, if you have three phones under your wireless plan but only use two of them while in a Roam Like Home destination, you’ll only be charged for the two devices (2 x $12, or 2 x $15) for each day that you use them.

How do I make calls to Canada, locally, or another international number while roaming?

Before you start: Make sure you’re manually dialing the number from your mobile phone and not using a voice assistant.

In general, use this format for dialing:

[+] [country code] [area code]

[phone number]

The + sign is used as a substitute for the Country Exit Code. Because different countries have different Exit Codes, using + ensures you will not have any issues making calls.

To dial +, press and hold down 0 until the plus symbol (+) appears. You can also refer to your device manufacturer’s user guide on how to dial using +.

Dialing a local number in the destination you’re visiting

Using the dialing format above, here’s an example of how you can make a local call. Let’s say you’re travelling in Germany and want to call a local restaurant to make reservations:

  • Restaurant’s local phone number: 030 43 21 567 (example only)
  • Country code for Germany: 49

Using the format, here’s what you’ll need to dial:

  • [+] [49] [030] [4321567]

Dialing another international number while in the destination you’re visiting

Let’s say you’re travelling in Germany and want to call friends or family in South Africa:

  • Phone number in South Africa: 030 43 21 567 (example only)
  • Country code: 27

Using the dialing format above, here’s what you’ll need to dial:

  • [+] [27] [21] [3456789]

Dialing back to Canada while in the destination you’re visiting

Let’s say you want to make a call back home to Canada while you’re still travelling in Germany:

  • Canadian number: (416) 555-1234
  • Country code: 1

Using the dialing format above, simply dial:

  • [+] [1] [416] [555 1234]

Helpful tip: To find out the country code for the country you're visiting, go to HowtoCallAbroad.com.

Checking voicemail

To access your voicemail while roaming, hold down 1.

  • You may be asked to enter your 10-digit wireless number before your voicemail PIN.
  • You may not see the voicemail indicator light or notification in real time. Not to worry, you'll still receive all your voicemails.
  • You will be charged the Roam Like Home daily fee for checking your voicemail.

Contacting Rogers

You can reach us from your wireless device from any country for free by dialing + 1 514 734-7699. To dial +, hold down 0 until the plus symbol (+) appears.

Making an emergency call?

Each country has its own emergency number (typically 9-1-1 or 1-1-2). Before your trip, confirm the emergency number for the country you’ll be visiting. In most cases, you won’t need to dial a special area code before the emergency number.

Can't use your phone while roaming? (e.g. No Service)?

If you’re having trouble using your device abroad, note the following:

  • You may be in an area that’s not serviced by any local carriers (e.g. rural area).
  • In order to use data while abroad, data roaming must be turned on.
  • Ensure that your phone isn’t in airplane mode, which will prevent your device from receiving any calls, texts or using any data.
  • Your device should automatically connect to a carrier when roaming. But if you’re having trouble connecting to a network, you may have to do it manually.
